Is our Environment any safer?

coast1Environmental conservation has become a global phenomenon today being discussed in major international forums, including the current Doha round. Kenya has been a major focal point in terms of the environmental conservation since the Late Laureate Margaret Wangari Maathai put the nation in the limelight, a few years ago when she bagged the Nobel peace prize Award.. However, despite her efforts together with those of other personalities including Former Prime Minister, Hon Raila Odinga, Kenya still faces unprecedented environmental challenges which has brought about diseases, poverty, hunger, resource-based conflicts among others.

coast3Nonetheless, the current event that took place yesterday on the seashore in which the president and other dignitaries oversaw the demolition of a ship that was containing heroine worth one billion shillings has once again caused uproar coast2among environment conservationists and citizens. Most citizens took onto the social media, protesting the action carried out by the security personnel. Environmentalists have also stated their disappointment and criticized the blowing off the ship while in the water stating that it is likely to lead to the defilement of the Indian Ocean.

However, there is no doubt that the current political leadership can play a critical role in mobilizing both urban and rural populations to engage in sustainable environmental conservation for the betterment of the nation.
